White Noise: Death From Above 1979

March 17, 2008

White Noise is music to shred with!

I find it hard sometimes to view any band labelled as Dance-Punk anything more than a passing fad of a hybrid genre of music. Death From Above 1979 is the exception. With a less generic pop sound typical in the genre, the unique sound is no doubt due to the fact the band refused to hire a lead guitarist, relying only on bass, drums, and a lot of synthesizers. DFA79 sounds a lot more punk based, with elements of drum & bass and a lot of synth sounds.

The Toronto based duo was active from 2001 - 2006. They called it quits after a year of pondering artistic differences. DFA79 never signed with a major label but their studio album You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine got some commercial success by being featured in video games like SSX, Tony Hawks, and even being used by Motorola.

You can download a few of their tracks Little Girl and Dead Womb straight off the band’s website deathfromabove1979.com. And their MySpace has the videos Romantic Rights and Blood on Our Hands up for grabs at myspace.come/deathfromabove1979

White Noise: Open Hand

September 25, 2007

White Noise is a segment where we feature musicians and bands that we think are worthy of your music player when you’re shredding down the hill.

Open Hand is rock band from LA. They’ve played with big names like Rise Against and are on the Dunn and Don Vito Rock tour (from TV’s Viva La Bam and JackAss)

Open Hand is a rock back, they don’t try to be anything other that a rock band, and do a pretty damn good job at it too. Instead of being stuck on some sub-genre, they are not afraid to explore the whole rock genre both vocally and musically, and that makes for a very diverse and interesting sound thats never over done, dull or boring.

They have the song Tough Girl for download on their MySpace page. Take No Action is my personal favorite.

You can preview and buy their album You And Me at trustkill.com

White Noise: The Sounds

August 7, 2007

sounds.jpg

White Noise is a segment where we feature musicians and bands that we think are worthy of your music player when you’re shredding down the hill.

The Sounds are a 80s New Wave meets 90s Alternative band from Sweden. The singer, Maja Ivarsson was featured along side Cobra Starship on the soundstrack for the movie Snakes On A Plane starring Sam Jackson.

Their live shows sound much more heavy while the recordings have a bigger sythesiser presence. Living in America and Ego are two great tracks from their album Dying to Say This To You.

They’ve toured with bands like Angels & Airwaves, and are now touring Europe I believe.

If you digged the band Stiletto Formal we featured on White Noise a while back you should check this band out.
